If
you are considering purchasing a Bullmastiff, here are some points you
should contemplate before you make this decision final.
Are
you prepared to keep, love and make the dog a part of your life for 7 to 12
years? (Unfortunately Bullmastiffs don’t live very long!)
Are
you willing to make the Bullmastiff a part of your family? Bullmastiffs are
very much human oriented and if raised the right way will learn to love and
protect you and your children too, (if you have any of course). A very
unhappy Bullmastiff would be left outside day and night and completely
ignored.
Socialising
your Bullmastiff is extremely important and before your bullmastiff baby
arrives home with you enquire about puppy preschool, (most local vet clinics hold classes these days). This allows the puppies to
interact with other breeds and learn about canine behaviour and the pecking
order.
Exercising
your Bullmastiff is a much discussed issue amongst breeders, owners and
Vets. It’s important to NOT over exercise your dog, if
you want a dog to walk or run several kilometres per day, please consider
another breed. I believe, short controlled (on lead) walks are okay but keep
exercise light until your dog is more than 12 months old.
It is recommended that
you groom your dog at least once a week to help the shedding of excess
hair and even more regularly during moulting season.
Your
dog should be fed at least two meals per day, consider costs relating to
feeding. The breeder of your puppy will recommend what foods to feed and
should provide you with a written guide about what to feed your dog. Please,
don’t let your puppy get too fat – it’s best for them to look like they are
about to have a feed. Excess weight puts pressure on the Bullmastiff's
skeleton and joints and will cause you further problems as your puppy grows
into adult-hood.
Do
you know a Bullmastiff female can weigh 50 plus kilos and a male can weigh
60 plus kilos, (sometimes more)? How do you feel about an over-sized lap
dog?
Bullmastiffs
tend to drool, especially if they are watching you cook or eat or after
they’ve had a drink of water. Think about how you and members in your
household feel about this. Your clothing and walls in your home (as
well as everything else they come into contact with), will be regularly
covered in slobber!
Your
Bullmastiff will definitely need to learn basic obedience commands. They can
sometimes be stubborn and only do things in their own time, so you will need
PATIENCE, PATIENCE, and PATIENCE!! On the contrary, Bullmastiffs are
almost always willing to please.
Thinking
of how large they grow and how much they weigh you also need to consider
that any visits to the vet and medications will also cost more due to their
size!
It
is also important for your dog to know who is boss; they can be demanding
and pushy. This does NOT mean physical harm and violence
towards your puppy to keep them under control. There are harmless ways to
ensure you are the pack leader, some of these things include; rewarding good
behaviour, ignoring bad behaviour, eating before your dog, keeping them off
the couch and bed (if you can lol!!). Making them wait a few seconds before
they eat out of their bowl and making them wait a few seconds before you go
through a doorway or gate.
The
bullmastiff is an EXCELLENT guard dog and I don’t believe they need any
extra guarding training. Their guarding ability is instinctive and will do
what they can to protect you, their owner and their family when needed!
Occasionally, your Bullmastiff may even surprise you with their guarding
instinct.
When
you get your bullmastiff puppy, if you have purchased a puppy on the limit
register, consider getting your puppy desexed. There is nothing worse
than unplanned pregnancies and more unwanted dogs in the world. Please
seriously talk to your Vet about desexing when you take your puppy for
vaccinations and check ups.
